If you’re microdosing with psilocybin truffles, you might wonder…
- How long they stay fresh?
- Can they can go bad?
- What does it mean when they turn a bit blue or green?
These are important questions — especially if you’ve stocked up for a full cycle or are picking up your truffles after a short break.
In this article, we’ll walk you through the truth about truffle shelf life, the meaning of best-before dates, and whether blue or green truffles are safe to use.
Spoiler alert: they usually are.
Do Truffles Expire? Understanding the Best-Before Date
Let’s start with a common misconception: microdosing truffles do not have an “expiration” date like dairy or meat products. Instead, they come with a best-before date, which refers to the time window in which they are at peak freshness and potency.
After this date, the truffles may slowly begin to lose some moisture or strength, but they don’t become dangerous or toxic. In fact, with proper storage, they can remain usable for weeks or even months beyond the best-before date.

How Long Do Microdosing Truffles Last?
The average shelf life of fresh psilocybin truffles is about 2–3 months if kept in a cool, dry, and dark place. But with good storage habits, they can last longer.
Here’s a general timeline:
-
Room temperature: a few days to a week (not recommended).
-
Refrigerated (sealed): up to 2–3 months.
Just remember: moisture and oxygen are the biggest enemies of truffle freshness.
Why Are My Truffles Turning Blue or Green?
Now let’s talk about the most common concern: color changes.
You open your truffles and notice a bluish or greenish tint. Should you throw them out?
Not at all. This is called bruising — and it’s actually a natural chemical reaction caused by the oxidation of psilocin, one of the active compounds in truffles (alongside psilocybin).
Just like how avocados or bananas brown when exposed to air, truffles can show blue or green hues when:
-
Handled or pressed
-
Exposed to air
-
Stored for a longer time
This change in color does not indicate mold or spoilage. In fact, it’s often a sign that your truffles are still active and potent.
So, if you see some blue or green spotting, it’s totally safe — and expected.
How to Tell If Truffles Are Actually Bad
While blue or green bruising is safe, there are a few signs that your truffles may no longer be good to consume. Trust your senses and look for:
-
A strong sour or foul smell
-
Slimy or wet texture
-
Visible fuzzy mold (white, black, or gray growth)
-
Truffles that have turned completely mushy
If you notice these signs, it’s best to dispose of the truffles.
How to Store Truffles Properly
To extend the life of your psilocybin microdosing truffles, follow these storage tips:
-
Keep them cool: Store them in the fridge (2–4°C), ideally in the vegetable drawer.
-
Keep them dry: Moisture shortens shelf life. If needed, wrap them in a paper towel inside an airtight container.
-
Limit air exposure: Oxygen speeds up oxidation and drying. A sealed container works best.
-
Freeze for long-term use: You can freeze fresh truffles in an airtight glass jar or vacuum bag. Thaw them slowly in the fridge when ready to use.
Are Dried Truffles a Better Option?
Some people prefer to dry their truffles for long-term storage. This is another safe option and can extend the shelf life to over a year. Just make sure they are completely dried before storing, and always use airtight containers.
Keep in mind that the dose of dried truffles is different — you’ll need about a third of the fresh weight to achieve the same microdose. (For example, 1 gram dried ≈ 3 grams fresh.)
Final Thoughts: Blue Truffles Are Safe (Usually)
Seeing a bit of blue or green on your microdosing truffles? Don’t toss them out — it’s part of nature doing its thing. As long as they smell fine, feel dry or firm, and have been stored correctly, they’re likely safe and effective to use.
